In Ireland, everyone has candles in their windows at Christmas, some people do it while they’re waiting for someone to come home, hence the phrase/s: I’ll light a candle for you, keep a candle lit for me etc – this was usually in regards for war or a long difficult journey – it was supposed to ‘light their way home’

For the passing of winter solaces
