@vsevolodkrolikov Yeah, that’s quite true. But people like Hugh Laurie and Rowan Atkinson seem silly on screen but in real life come off and really serious. Jim Carrey, too, rubber faced in comedy movies, but a serious guy in real life.

That shot’s edited in, so we don’t know the timing of it. I wouldn’t read too much into it; she’s only saying something that’s been said millions of times (regardless of whether it’s true.) I believe Jimmy Carr in his book rejects the idea as illusory – we don’t bother noticing when comics have a stable and happy life.

Wonder if that Jan lady realized when she said “Most comedians are miserable” that Fry’s manic-depressive. He didn’t seem to smile when she said that. Lucky for Alan’s observation broke what might have been an awkward silence.
