Give the parents to be a special card which once the child is born entitles them to a professional drawing of their newborn baby as a keepsake, give them an envelope addressed to the artist, and ask them to enclose the picture then pop it in the mail. Just purchase the to be work from a local artist you like. The artist will gladly wait for the picture to arrive so he can get the other half of his or her commission.

give the mom a gift certificate to a local day spa where she can be pampered (have nails and hair done, foot massage or body massage) . . . time to relax before the big day arrives . . . but of course, attach a separate gift certificate to be used when the baby comes to get something she still needs

I don’t know if it is really unique or not, but I just had a baby shower and something I really appreciated being through one pregnancy already was a gift my mother-in-law and mother gave me. It was a blue basket full of all the necessities, baby power, diaper rash cream, diapers, Infant Tylenol, Mylicon Gas Relief, baby wipes, travel wipes, baby shampoo, baby wash, baby lotion, baby oil, etc. If you do not want to do the basket idea and the parents-to-be do not have a diaper bag you could put all that stuff in a diaper bag with a cute little outfit and a bow and give as a gift. From experience, the parents will appreciate it after the baby is here. It will be the best gift they received!

if you would like something alternative and unique, a special tarot reading for the mother to be would be terrific.

Get some friends together and organise a voucher for a nappy wash service…That or buy her a stack of disposable nappies. If you want to get her flowers, opt for the kind that has socks, singlets and bibs, etc rolled up to look like a big bunch of flowers. Its far more practical and flowers die anyway

For my youngest Child (i now have three ). A great baby shower idea is to get a really pretty writing set and a smallish gift box. during the shower ask as many of the guests to write an encouraging, congratulating or pearl of wisdom note/letter to the mum to be or parents to be and place it in the box.
to be given at the end of the party.
it is one of the best gift ideas i can think of for any occasion.
I was also given one at my kitchen tea, and i just loved it

A lot of spas offer pregnancy massage. That would be awesome. Personalized candy bars as give aways, like those at thatsawrapsandiego.com. Nice romantic dinner for two, since it will probably be a while before they go out like that.

I just bought my cousin’s baby boy a baby robe with little towel and houseshoes. The parents loved it. Or you could make a basket full of things like rattlers, onesies, diapers, bottles, and bedtime stories, and bibs. oh my goodness, endless possibilities! Big items like strollers, carseats, walkers, etc. those things are always appreciated, and keepsakes, Baby’s First Footprint, and other memorabilia make good gifts. I don’t have kids, just advice on them! hahah

It’s small and simple, but the best thing my wife and I got (by far) was a Boppy pillow. We used it daily and it was a huge help for my wife with feeding.http://www.boppy.com/

How about a swaddle? One of my favorite shower gifts I received for our son was a Cocooi swaddle. It’s made of a beautiful fabric and it’s absolutely gorgeous! My Aunt had my son’s initials embroidered on it which makes it even more special.
The best thing is that it’s less than $50, but looks like it costs a lot more ;)
